The main changes

The main changes in the Highway Code which came in to force on 1st July 2006 were:
  • introduction of a penalty point system
  • mandatory day time use of the lights during the whole year
  • stricter penalties for traffic offences (up to 50,000 CZK)
  • mandatory use of cycle helmets for cyclists up to 18 years,
  • mandatory child restraint devices on all types of roads
  • the possibility of the Czech Police Force to preliminary withdraw a driving license on the spot in the case of a serious traffic offence
  • The Czech Police Force has the right in the case of a serious offence to prevent the driver from continuing their journey through the use of technical devices
  • The Czech Police Force has the right in selected cases to ask a driver who has committed an offence for a caution
  • driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs is now considered a criminal offence
  • when leaving a roundabout the driver should signal to show the change of direction
  • when overtaking a cyclist a driver is obliged to signal to show the change of direction
